Phobjikha Valley and Gangtey village are situated east of Punakha and northeast of Wangdue Phodrang. After five hours drive from Thimphu we reach Phobjikha Valley at an elevation of 3000 m. During the drive towards the valley you can encounter the historic Gangtey Goempa monastery built in the 17th century. Situated on a prominent hilltop, this Monastery that is the home of the Gangtey Tulku, a highly respected reincarnate lama, dominates the scenery.
Phobjikha is a wide, beautiful alpine wetland valley where the Black Necked Cranes fly down from Tibet to spend the winter. These majestic birds are some of only 5000 left in the world today.
The hill side vegetation is mostly pine forests, interspersed with Rhododendron trees, with thick brush-like bamboo carpeting the floor. East of Punakha, the road passes through the colourful village of Wangdue Phodrang and climbs past deep ravines with dizzying drops to the little visited, picturesque valley of Phobjikha, home to the quaint rural settlement of Gangtey.
Itinerary
Day 01: Arrival and Drive from Paro to Thimphu Pick up from Paro International Airport (2280m). Depending on the arrival time of the Druk Air flight, you will either be served a meal in Paro or be driven straight to Thimphu, the capital city, which is about 53 kilometers away. The drive normally takes about an hour and a half. If Thimphu is reached early, you can go out in the town and mingle with the Bhutanese people. Dinner will be served in hotel.
Day 02: Thimphu Sightseeing Sightseeing in Thimphu (2320m) includes visits to, National Library which was established in 1967 and has many ancient Dzongkha and Tibetan texts); Painting School or the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (the 13 traditional arts and crafts like painting, woodcarving, embroidery and statue making; National Memorial Chorten which was built in 1974 in memory of the third King of Bhutan; Semtokha Dzong which is about five kilometers south of Thimphu. Semtokha Dzong was built in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Today it houses the Institute for Language and Culture Studies.); Tashichhodzong the seat of the government of Bhutan. It houses the secretariat, the Throne Room, His Majesty’s secretariat, the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Finance. If the sight seeing falls on the weekend you can visit Thimphu’s open vegetable market where farmers from the nearby regions gather to sell their produce.
Day 03: Drive from Thimphu to Phobjikha Valley

Day 04: Drive Phobjikha valley to Gangtey Gompa & trek to Gogona
After breakfast we will drive to Gangtey Gompa and then our trek to Gogona begins. A moderate trail leads through meadows and fields, and then ascends to the Tselela Pass through mixed forest of juniper, bamboo, magnolia and rhododendron. The people of Gogona speak a language called Bjopkha – the language of nomads. Their life in this isolated valley has encouraged then continuing using their ancient dialect. Overnight in camp
Day 05: Trek Gogona to Khotokha A gentle climb leads to Shobjula (altitude 3,500 m) and then descends to a wide-open valley. Overnight in camp
Day 06: Trek Khotokha to Chuzomsa A short climb to the Tashila Pass (altitude 2,800 m). Walk down a long way through ever changing vegetation into the valley of the Dhang Chhu. We will visit Punakha which is. blessed with temperate climate and owing to its natural drainage from Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, the Punakha valley produces abundant crops and fruits. There are splendid views of the distant Himalayas at Dochula pas (alt. 3,050m) on Thimphu – Punakha road. Overnight in hotel
Day 07: Drive Punakha to Paro (124 km)
After breakfast we will drive to Paro across Dochula pass (3050 M) which provides a superb view of the highest peaks of Bhutan, such as Gangkar, Puensum, table Mountain, Masakhang etc. Arrive in Paro and check-in hotel.
Day 08: Paro Sightseeing
After breakfast, drive to Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress where Bhutanese warriors fought Tibetan invaders centuries ago. The snowy dome of sacred Chomolhari, “mountain of goddess” looms directly over the dzong. Along the way, see the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. After lunch visit Ta Dzong, originally built as watch tower, now houses National Museum of the Kingdom. It boasts antique thankhas, textile, weapons and armou, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Then walk down the train to visit Rinpung Dzong, meaning ‘fortress of the heap of jewels” which has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the courtyard of the Rinpung Dzong are fine wall paintings.
Day 09: Fly Paro to Kathmandu/ Kolkata/ Delhi/ Bangkok

Chitwan National Park Tour
